Samuel Blythe Price was born 6th October, 1908 in Honey Grove, Texas. Sammy Price formally studied piano with Booker T. Washington’s daughter and worked in a music store in the mid 1920’s. During his early career he was a singer and dancer before playing the piano in Kansas City , Chicago and Detroit. His best work is arguably with Decca Records with his own band, known as the ‘Texas Bluesicians’, although he also accompanied many other musicians over the years.
Later in life he played at the’ Roosevelt Hotel’ in New York City and was the headline at the ‘Crawdaddy Restaurant’ (A New Orleans themed restaurant in New York. Later he moved to playing at ‘Boston Copley Plaza’ in the 1980’s.
Sammy Price died of a heart attack in April 1992 at his home in Harlem, New York, he was eighty-three years old.
Sammy Price was of course a pianist of many colours. He played boogie woogie for sure, but also jump blues and jazz. So naturally when looking at his collection, some of it is more boogie inspired than others, but he is certainly a pianist of note and worth listening to for sure.
