Joe Willie Perkins was born 7th July, 1913 in Belzoni, Mississippi, where he was rasied onm a p[lantation in Honey Island. He started out as a guitarist, but after injuring the tendons in his left arm in a knife fight with a chorus girl (you couldn’t make stuff up like this up if you tried) he switched to the piano at around twelve to thirteen years old.
Perkins got the name ‘Pinetop’ because of the success he had with he’s recording of ‘Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie’ at Sam Phillips Sun Studio in Memphis Tennessee. He didn’t actually write this song, it was originally written and recorded in 1928 by ‘Pinetop Smith’, but seeing as he played it so much, well, that’s how nicknames come about.
He took a break when he moved to Illinois, until Hooker persuaded him to record again in 1968 and soon afterwards, Perkins replaced Otis Spann in the Muddy Waters band. After ten years of that, he created the ‘Legendary Blues Band’ with ‘Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith’.
Although he appeared on many recordings, he never had an album of his own until 1988 with ‘After Hours’. Perkins played a cameo role in the 1980 film ‘The Blues Brothers’ outside of Aretha Franklin’s Cafe. He also appeared in the 1987 film ‘Angel Heart’ as a member of a band.
Pinetop Perkins was one of the last of what you might call the original blues-men, he had even known Robert Johnson in the past, but legend or not, nobody can yet live forever. _Perkins past away on the 21st March, 2011 of a cardiac arrest at his home in Austin Texas. He had many performances booked that he sadly could never make, although he had conceded that he couldn’t play like he used to. But at ninety-seven, it’s amazing that he was still around and playing at all, let alone playing live, impressive to say the least.
