Huey Pierce Smith was born 26th January, 1936, New Orleans, Louisiana. Huey Smith wrote his first song ‘Robertson Street Boogie’ when he was eight years old, it was named after the street on which he lived. He began working in the local clubs and recording when he was fifteen, along with his friend Eddie Jones, who rose to fame as Guitar Slim. By the time he was eighteen (1952) he signed a recording contract with Savoy Records and released his first known single ‘You Made Me Cry’.
In 1957 he formed the band ‘Huey ‘Piano’ Smith And His Clowns, signing a contract with Ace Records they hit the charts with several singles, including the famous song ‘Rockin’ Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu’. It was originally released as two parts, with the flip side being an instrumental version. It sold over a million copies.
