Vernon Harrison (Boogie Woogie Red) was born 18 October 1925 in Rayville, Louisiana, although he was moved to Detroit soon after in 1927. In his younger years, he performed in local clubs and worked along side the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson and John Lee Hooker. In the mid 70’s he played at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from which he named the first of his Albums, a live recording at the said club in 1974. He only recorded one album after that in 1977, which leaves us only a small record of his playing, as although he earned his nickname from his prowess at boogie woogie, apart from some touring in Europe in the 70’s, he didn’t often play outside his home town.
If you are from the U.K and can remember back to the 70’s, he did apparently appear on the T.V show ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’ in May 1973, I wonder how many of you saw and remember that?
He passed away in Detroit on the 2nd July, 1992 at the age of 66, it’s a shame he didn’t record more for us to enjoy in the future, but what there is I’d certainly recommend.
